Setting the record straight: an introduction to citizenship education (pdf), our briefing paper for politicians, covers how citizenship education:
- became established in schools – initial as a cross-curricular theme under a Conservative government and then as a statutory area of study under the last Labour government – in response to increasing levels of political apathy;
- is the only compulsory curriculum area of study that encompasses politics, economics, and the law and that teaches younger people about their rights and responsibilities as citizens;
- can strengthen pupil motivation and behaviour and schools’ relationships with the communities they serve when it’s supported by school leaders and taught by confident educators.
