MALCOLM GROUP
Malcolm Logistics, a division of The Malcolm Group, is one of the UK’s leading providers of third-party logistics services.
Focussing on intermodal solutions, the division offers fully integrated road, rail, warehousing and bonded warehousing services throughout the UK and, more increasingly, into Europe.
Road transport solutions
Malcolm Logistics operate innovative and cost-effective road transport and distribution solutions, which service a wide range of industries and products.
Through a comprehensive network of 7-day, 24-hour control centres, experienced traffic planners work closely with customers, and their customers in turn, to schedule vehicle movements to meet daily demand.
High-spec traffic management systems are in place to support traffic planners in their role, which has resulted in systematic management of driver and vehicle operations.
This approach to traffic management has not only provided consequential benefits for Malcolm Logistics but also for its customers and the environment.
Rail transport solutions
In the past decade rail transport has re-emerged as an attractive freight option, and Malcolm Rail’s pioneering express services are leading the way.
Launching the service in connection with Direct Rail Services in 2001, Malcolm Rail now provides reliable daily and overnight transit between the following locations:
• Grangemouth — Linwood
• Grangemouth — Aberdeen
• Grangemouth — Crick (DIRFT)
• Crick (DIRFT) — Mossend
There are 60 trains operated each week between six terminals nationwide.
Moving freight by rail rather than road produces 3.4 times less CO2 per tonne-km and 70 per cent less carbon emissions (source: Department for Transport, Delivering a Sustainable Transport System: The Logistics Perspective (December, 2008)).
Rail produces 80 per cent less carbon dioxide, 20 per cent less volatile carbon monoxide, 5 per cent less fine particulate and 10 per cent less volatile organic compounds.
Environmental sustainability is a significant benefit of using rail freight. Other benefits include: more efficient energy consumption and reduced road congestion.
Rail terminal management
In 2008, in partnership with Prologis, Malcolm Rail took operational control of Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal (DIRFT) — the largest, single, inland rail-freight terminal in the UK.
This initiative expanded Malcolm Rail’s operations and developed the existing rail-linked warehousing services already available.
DIRFT currently handles 126 trains per week for major train operating companies such as DB Schenker, Direct Rail Services, Freightliner and GB Railfreight.
Current container-lifting volumes are around 175,000 units per annum, handled by four reach stackers. This is anticipated to grow by up to 30 per cent over the next few years.
Among the end users serviced by DIRFT and Malcolm Rail’s other terminal operations are major shipping lines, key retailers and multinational corporations.
Warehousing solutions
Malcolm Logistics provides flexible warehousing storage, 24/7, across more than 5 million sq ft of warehousing space.
Warehousing facilities currently encompass 10 locations in central Scotland, Lancashire, Yorkshire, Avonmouth and Northamptonshire, offering rail-linked services at key locations. These state-of-the-art facilities have racked and block stack capabilities suitable for short- and long-term activities.
In addition to this, they also manage over 1.5 million sq ft of third-party warehousing activities at a number of customer locations throughout the UK.
Malcolm Logistics understand the importance of balancing supply with demand and have invested in market-leading warehouse management systems, including wireless scanning, at all sites.
Bonded warehousing solutions
With 1.2m sq ft of warehouse space, Malcolm Logistics is one of the largest third-party operators of bonded warehousing in the UK.
Facilities offer modern, bonded warehousing backed by investment in HMRC-approved IT systems.
Rail-side warehousing is available at Grangemouth, Linwood and DIRFT terminals.
Key features of the bonded warehousing operations include:
• Shared user facilities
• Racked and block stack capabilities
• Cross docking
• Case picking
• Cask storage
Secondary distribution solutions
Operating from the Newhouse distribution centre, Malcolm Logistics’ secondary distribution operations now serve a number of blue chip customers nationwide.
As an alternative to larger scale freight operations, the secondary distribution service delivers full or part loads from the distribution centre directly to the end user.
